MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED:

 

Appropriate certification which verifies typing 45 accurate net words per minute for five minutes with a maximum of ten (10) errors. Typing certificate must be dated within one (1) year of the date of your application.

A Computerized Examination through the National Testing Network (NTN) is required and must be completed in order to be considered for an Oral Board.  Rules and timelines established by NTN will be followed.  Qualifications will be determined by the Department.

Search for Jobs and click on "Emergency Communications;" scroll down to NEVADA and check the box next to: North Las Vegas Police Department / Police Communications Dispatcher.  Click on "Continue" in column on the left.  Follow the remaining instructions on the screen to schedule the required test.

Candidates must achieve the required minimum score set by the Department.
  • Oral Board – Pass/Fail – Scheduled by appointment only.
  • Background Investigation Process – Includes an intensive background check, polygraph/CVSA examination, medical/drug screen exam, and a psychological evaluation.
  • All Persons who meet the minimum requirements and wish to apply for this position are personally responsible for submitting a completed online application, submitting a qualifying typing certificate, and for obtaining acceptable scores on the NTN Test.

Education and Experience:

  • High school diploma or GED and,

     
  • One year of general office experience directly involved in performing customer service or public contact duties which involves multi-tasking duties.

     
  • Preferred Qualifications:  Successful completion of law enforcement emergency response training and/or experience using a switchboard and/or a two way radio system.   Possesses the ability to speak Spanish fluently.

Licenses and Certifications:

  • NCIC Certification within six months of hire/reclassification.

     
  • Must possess a valid state driver's license and maintain satisfactory motor vehicle record, and the ability to obtain appropriate Nevada state driver’s license within required time frame.

Skills:
  • Correct English usage, spelling, punctuation, and grammar.

     
  • Operate telephones, computers, computer peripherals, and other related office equipment. 

Physical and Mental Abilities:

 

  • Ability to work any shift or days of the week, to include evenings, holidays, weekends and overtime as assigned and as part of a team.

  • Ability to interact with people during stressful or emotional situations and maintain composure.

  • Ability to perform duties under highly stressful or emotional conditions and type accurately at a speed necessary for successful job performance.

     
  • Ability to speak clearly and communicate effectively, making oneself understood in person, over the telephone and over the radio.

     
  • Ability to listen well and retain important information.

     
  • Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.

     
  • Ability to make decisions within broad guidelines using common sense and good judgment. 

     
  • Ability to perform multiple tasks simultaneously with a high degree of accuracy.

     
  • Ability to learn emergency and non-emergency telephone operations, procedures, call screening techniques, and telephone etiquette.

     
  • Ability to learn CADS operations and procedures.

     
  • Ability to learn how to read maps, geographic features, and directional information.

     
  • Ability to learn and explain basic civil and criminal law.

     
  • Ability to learn knowledge and skills required to perform functions of this position.

     
  • Ability to learn to keep track of multiple field units.

     
  • Ability to learn to operate a multi-frequency two way radio.

 

Ability to maintain physical condition appropriate to the performance of assigned duties and responsibilities which may include, but are not limited to:

 

  • Sitting for extended periods of time at a fixed position until scheduled break or meal time;

     
  • Utilizing a computer keyboard and mouse, making repetitive movements;

     
  • Operating assigned equipment.

     
  • Mobility sufficient to move around in a dispatch center environment; strength to lift and move boxes of supplies weighing up to 30 pounds; and endurance to work within a confined area for long periods of time.

 

Ability to maintain effective audio-visual discrimination and perception needed for:

  • Making observations sufficient to handle multiple tasks;
  • Communicating with others;

     
  • Reading and writing;

     
  • Reading computer screens with varying colors and font sizes;

     
  • Listening with a headset and telephone handset;

     
  • Listening and understanding multiple conversations at one time.
