Qualifications and Attributes:
Education and Experience:

High school diploma or G.E.D. and,

Preferred: Two years of paid or volunteer work experience directly involved in routine animal care, control and handling for a veterinarian, kennel or shelter or a closely related similar work environment.

Licenses and Certifications:
•    Must possess or obtain a valid Nevada driver's license and maintain a satisfactory motor vehicle record.

•    Complete the National Animal Control Association Training Academy levels 1 and 2 within two years of hire/reclassification date.

•    Tranquilizer Certificate within required departmental time frame.

•    O/C Spray Certificate within required departmental time frame.

•    Baton Certificate within required departmental time frame.

•    Taser certification within required departmental time frame

 

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
•    Animal behaviors and rabies identification and identification of other common animal diseases or disorders; state and local animal protection services laws and ordinances; City geography, including main highways, major streets and subdivisions.

•    Handle all animals in a humane and controlled manner.

•    Dealing courteously and diplomatically with the general public, including hostile or irate people.

•    Use of animal protection services equipment including but not limited to tranquilizer gun, lasso, leash, cages, traps, and O/C spray.

•    Communicate clearly and effectively with the general public.

•    Prepare and maintain accurate records and reports.

•    Ability to learn and follow rules and regulations of the NLVPD and of pertinent federal, state, and local laws, regulations, ordinances as applicable to the animal protection services function.

•    Ability to maintain satisfactory driving record.

•    Ability to apply animal protection services principles, practices, methods, techniques and equipment as required on assigned.

•    Ability to make quick, sound and logical decisions in emergency situations and be able to work under strict discipline.

•    Ability to handle and control difficult animals in a humane manner.

•    Normal visual acuity, depth perception, field of vision, color perception, hearing, speaking, sense of smell, and texture perception. 

•    Moves, lifts, and pulls animals weighing up to 100 pounds short distances (5 - 100 feet) with the ability to lift them vertically into the animal protection vehicle.  Works in a variety of weather conditions while capturing animals and enforcing City ordinances.  Bends, stoops, climbs, traverses over various landscapes avoiding natural and manmade obstacles, walking or running potential long distances, repeat strenuous physical motion/activity when handling animals and necessary equipment.
 

WORKING CONDITIONS:
While performing the essential functions of this job the employee is regularly exposed to outdoor weather conditions and a variety of animal and human diseases, is frequently exposed to dangerous situations and risk of bodily injury and is occasionally required to work on-call duties during evenings, weekends and holidays.

Working conditions are typically moderately quiet but are occasionally loud.

The employee is subject to hazards such as walking and working on slippery and uneven surfaces.

The employee is required to wear personal protective equipment.

Regular and timely attendance is required.
