Qualifications and Attributes:
Education and Experience:
High school diploma.
One year of progressively responsible experience performing general field maintenance work.
Equivalency: May substitute a combination of equivalent education and experience. The city assesses 1 year of fulltime experience as equivalent to one year of education.
G.E.D. may be substituted for high school diploma.
Licenses and Certifications:
Must possess a valid State of Nevada driver’s license at time of hire and maintain a satisfactory motor vehicle record for the duration of employment.
Must obtain and maintain a valid:
Nevada Department of Transportation, Flagger Certification within 12 (twelve) months of appointment to position. Failure to obtain and maintain this certification will result in non-confirmation of appointment.
IMSA or ATSSA Work Zone Safety Certification within 12 (twelve) months of appointment to position. Failure to obtain and maintain this certification will result in non-confirmation of appointment.
Complete an OSHA-10 course in construction industry safety and health hazard recognition and prevention, developed by the Occupational Safety and Health Administration of the U.S. Department of Labor. Completion card must be continuously maintained while employed in this classification. Failure to complete and maintain the course within six (6) months of hire will result in non-confirmation of appointment.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Practices, methods and materials used in general construction, grounds maintenance and general maintenance work.
Equipment and tools used in the area of work assigned.
Traffic laws, ordinances and rules involved in equipment operations.
Occupational hazards and standard safety practices.
Performing a variety of unskilled and semi-skilled maintenance, construction and repair work in the area of work assigned.
Operating a variety of vehicular and stationary mechanical equipment in a safe and effective manner.
Performing heavy manual labor.
Using small hand and power tools, such as shovels, rakes, brooms, weed-eaters, blowers, etc.
Understanding and following oral and written instructions.
Communicating clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.
Establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with those contracted in the course of work.
Working independently in the absence of supervision.
Constantly standing, in combination with walking, indoors and outdoors, while performing general maintenance duties. Depending on assignment, walks up to 5 miles a day on all types of terrain,
uneven ground and slopes.
Occasionally sitting, while working at ground level, driving or riding in vehicles, often over uneven terrain with frequent bouncing and jarring.
Frequent lifting and carrying 5-50lbs., tools, trash, equipment, vegetation and debris. Occasionally 50-100lbs., tools, equipment, materials, heavy debris and furniture. Carrying up to 50ft.
Frequent push/pull, using both hand and power tools, exerting a force of 25-75lbs while shoveling, pulling and chopping vegetation, moving heavy debris onto truck, moving heavy materials and objects.
Occasionally climbing ladders, bleachers, stairs, up and down steep terrain and on and off vehicles depending on assigned tasks.
Frequently bending/twisting, at waist, knees and neck while working in a variety of positions performing maintenance and manual labor duties. May be required to do extensive shoveling, raking, hoeing and weeding.
Frequent kneeling/crouching/crawling, while performing manual labor, repair and maintenance duties at street or ground level. May work in ditches and storm drains.
Constant use of hands and arms reaching, grasping, fingering, gripping and handling, while using hand and power tools, performing labor tasks and shoveling. Requires overhead reaching for sign removal, loading items on truck for disposal and using tools. Can involve extensive use of hand tools in shoveling, raking, etc.
Constant use of sight abilities, including hand and eye coordination and depth perception to safely operate tools, equipment and vehicles.
Constant use of speech/hearing, in communicating with coworkers and citizens and maintaining a safe work environment.
Maintaining mental capacity which allows the capability of making sound decisions; effective interaction and communication with others and demonstrating intellectual capabilities.
May work in awkward positions, tight or confined spaces.
WORKING CONDITIONS:
Working mostly outdoors in an environment with exposure to all typical weather conditions, including travel from site to site, and indoors within various building facilities.
Hazards include: exposure to sharp objects, moving objects, vehicles, dust, noise, vibration, grease, smoke, fumes, gases, uneven and slippery surfaces, cramped quarters, working at heights, biological waste, sewer hazards, toxic and caustic chemicals, inclement weather condition and electrical shock.
PRE-EMPLOYMENT SCREENING:
Candidates for this position are subject to a Pre-employment screening. Pre-employment screening includes but is not limited to: Local & State Criminal History Check; Federal Criminal History Check via submission of fingerprints; Drug screening.
This position requires a Tier I background check with the North Las Vegas Police Department. Background check includes but is not limited to: Local and State Criminal History Check; Federal Criminal History Check.
This position requires a Group III medical evaluation. Medical evaluation consist of a drug screen and back evaluation.
