ESSENTIAL INFORMATION 

  • Submit a Complete Application – For your application to be considered, you MUST fully complete an online application by providing sufficient information to demonstrate how you meet the minimum and any preferred qualifications, attach any documents as necessary, and answer ALL questions.   • Pay Considerations –The starting hourly pay for this position is $32.74 - $50.79.  Starting salary is dependent on education, qualifications, and experience but will not exceed the midpoint of the range. Existing employees will receive increases as outlined by their bargaining agreement.
  • Work Schedule – This position is scheduled to work 4 days per week, 9 hours per day, (36-hour work week) Monday through Thursday, 6:30am to 4:30pm. May be required to work various shifts; emergency call outs; this position will be required to complete a formal training period that may include various shifts; etc.

THE ROLE
Under supervision, this position is responsible for the performance of a variety of duties in the enforcement of state statutes, city ordinances and other City regulations; maintain custody and control of prisoners being transported or detained while in lawful custody and serving warrants as needed.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Education and Experience

  • High school diploma or GED, minimum age of 21 (at time of application), US citizen, character above reproach. Previous law enforcement experience desirable. Bilingual proficiency is desired but not required.
  • Obtain appropriate POST Peace Officer Certification within established time period.
  • Must possess a valid state driver's license and maintain satisfactory motor vehicle record with the ability to obtain appropriate Nevada state driver’s license within required time frame.
    Licenses and Certifications
  • Must possess a P.O.S.T. Peace Officer Certification Category I or Category II at the time of application. A Copy of the applicant’s current and valid P.O.S.T. Certification must be scanned and attached to the online application.

SELECTION PROCESS

  1. Complete Online Application - Interested candidates MUST submit a completed application through the City’s application system. Evaluation of meeting requirements will be made solely on information provided on the application and any required attachments.
  2. The selection process will begin with a screening of the application/resume - The best qualified candidates will be invited to participate in the assessment process. The selection process will include (dates to be determined).
  3. File Review – 
  4. Physical Fitness Test - (Pass/fail) 
  5. Oral Board Interview (Weighted 100%, Passing Score 70%):  
  6. Pre-Employment Screening – For non-police positions only: Selected candidates for this position are subject to a pre-employment screening which includes but is not limited to local & state criminal history check; federal criminal history checks via submission of fingerprints; and drug screening. *IMPORTANT INFORMATION: Background check processing may take 2 to 3 months to complete.  Background Screening/Investigation Includes an extensive background check, polygraph/CVSA examination, medical/drug screen exam. All top scoring candidates must pass the Background Investigation in order to move forward in the process. Applicants who proceed in the selection process will be required to complete an extensive police background. *IMPORTANT INFORMATION: Background check processing may take 3 to 4 months to complete.  Among other items, the following are disqualifying behaviors: 
    •Any felony conviction.
    •Any domestic violence conviction.
    •Gross misdemeanor and misdemeanor convictions will be reviewed on a case by case basis.
    •Although there have been recent changes to laws regarding the legal possession and consumption of marijuana, the City of North Las Vegas will continue to adhere to its professional standards and guidelines as it relates to recent and continuous use of the drug. 
  7. Selection/Offers -

Note: Subsequent vacancies during the life of the internal eligibility list may require participation in an additional selection interview. The selection interview will be weighted 100%, requiring a passing score of 70% in order to be considered for the subsequent position vacancy.

The selection process may include any combination of written, performance, and oral assessments to evaluate job-related education, experience, knowledge, skills, and abilities. The City reserves the right to modify selection devices and test instruments in accordance with accepted legal, ethical, and professional standards. The City will provide reasonable accommodation to qualified individuals with disabilities.   It is the responsibility of the candidate requiring accommodation to contact the Human Resources Department (preferably in writing) at the time of application.
