ESSENTIAL INFORMATION 

    • Submit a Complete Application – For your application to be considered, you MUST fully complete an online application by providing sufficient information to demonstrate how you meet the minimum and any preferred qualifications, attach any documents as necessary, and answer ALL questions.     • Shift work required – This position supports an operation that is open 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. You must be able to work any shift, any day of the week, to include weekends, holidays, and overtime. Currently, the schedule consists of 10-hour shifts and are divided into two squads with days off being Sunday, Monday, and Tuesday, or Thursday, Friday, and Saturday. Scheduled to work 8:00 am to 6:00 pm.
    • Pay Considerations –The starting hourly pay for this position is $21.28. The selected candidate for this position will start at the beginning of the salary range, no exceptions. Existing employees will receive increases as outlined by their bargaining agreement.

THE ROLE

Civilian Police Cadets under direct supervision, will use this position to build the necessary knowledge and skills surrounding public service to enable them to compete for an entry level police recruit position. The main responsibilities will be administrative in nature and communicating general information to the public.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

    • Must be the minimum age of eighteen (18) years.
    • Applicant cannot be older than the age of twenty-one (21) years before July 1 of the year application is accepted.
    • Applicant must have character above reproach.

Education and Experience

    • High School Diploma or GED.
    • Preferred one (1) year experience as Police Cadet/Junior ROTC/ROTC Cadet or currently enrolled in an accredited college or university majoring in one of the following areas: criminal justice, public/business administration, sociology, psychology, or related field of study.

Licenses and Certifications

    • Must possess a valid Nevada state driver’s license or have the ability to obtain within six (6) months of hire/reclassification, and maintain a satisfactory motor vehicle record.

    • NCIC and NCJIS Certifications within six (6) months of hire/reclassification.
    • Preferred: Have the ability to successfully complete the Police Entry Level process and hired as such within two years (cycles to be determined by the NLVPD) after reaching minimum testing standards.

SELECTION PROCESS

1. Complete online application - Interested candidates MUST submit a completed application through the City’s application system. Evaluation of meeting requirements will be made solely on information provided on the application and any required attachments.

2. Typing Test (Pass/Fail) 

3.Oral Board Interview (Weighted 100%, Passing Score 70%)

4. Background Screening/Investigation Includes an extensive background check, polygraph/CVSA examination, medical/drug screen exam. All top scoring candidates must pass the Background Investigation in order to move forward in the process. Applicants who proceed in the selection process will be required to complete an extensive police background. Among other items, the following are disqualifying behaviors:

    •  Any felony conviction.
    •  Any domestic violence conviction.
    • Gross misdemeanor and misdemeanor convictions will be reviewed on a case by case basis.
    • Although there have been recent changes to laws regarding the legal possession and consumption of marijuana, the City of North Las Vegas will continue to adhere to its professional standards and guidelines as it relates to recent and continuous use of the drug.

4. Selection/Offers

 

Note: Subsequent vacancies during the life of the internal eligibility list may require participation in an additional selection interview. The selection interview will be weighted 100%, requiring a passing score of 70% in order to be considered for the subsequent position vacancy.

 

The selection process may include any combination of written, performance, and oral assessments to evaluate job-related education, experience, knowledge, skills, and abilities. The City reserves the right to modify selection devices and test instruments in accordance with accepted legal, ethical, and professional standards.
