MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED: 

Education and Experience: 

  • High school diploma or equivalent. College level course work in fire science, fire administration or a related field is desirable.
  • Any combination of education, training and experience which produces the knowledge, skills and abilities required for the job and related to the essential functions of the position.   

Licenses and Certifications:

  • Must possess a valid state driver's license and maintains satisfactory motor vehicle record with the ability to obtain appropriate Nevada state driver’s license within required time frame.
  • Must obtain Class C with F endorsement or comparable license from their state of primary residence within two (2) years from the date of hire.
  • Must have a valid Southern Nevada Health District or National Registry EMT, EMT-A or Paramedic certification/license at time of conditional job offer.
  • Must have successfully completed a Candidate Physical Ability Test (CPAT) by the time of a conditional job offer.   (https://www.csn.edu/cpattesting
  • Must be able to successfully complete a thorough background check, drug screen, physical examination, and psychological evaluation prior to formal job offer.

Knowledge:

  • Basic mathematical principles.  
  • Basic mechanical principles.  
  • Spatial relationships.  
  • Southern Nevada Health District Emergency Medical Services protocols and standards.  

Skills:

  • Principles and practices of fire fighting and rescue methods and procedures. 
  • Emergency medical assistance methods; hazards and safety precautions of the work. 

Abilities:

  • Learn to understand and act in accordance with departmental policies, rules and instructions in the field of fire fighting.  
  • Learn to understand rules, regulations, Minimum Company Standards (MCS), Standard Operating Guidelines (SOG’s) and Tactics 101 of the North Las Vegas Fire Department.  
  • Learn to understand pertinent federal, state and local laws, codes, ordinances and regulations, including current City of North Las Vegas Policies.  
  • Firefighting is very physically demanding. Firefighters carry 80 to 100 lbs. of equipment -- such as hoses, axes, ladders, chain saws and extinguishers -- into and around the fire scene to rescue victims and extinguish the fire. This may include climbing many flights of stairs.
  • Responsible for the clean-up of fire scenes.  Carry, scoop, shovel, sweep and mop excess water and debris caused by the fire and firefighting efforts. Firefighters tear down or shore up weak or dangerous parts of fire structures such as floors, roofs or overhangs.
  • Use ladders and work at heights to rescue victims and fight fires.  After locating and freeing the victim, firefighters must determine the safest path of evacuation; may be required to lift and/or carry the victim with or without assistance in dangerous situations.
  • Work under strict discipline and follow orders.  
  • Demonstrate mechanical aptitude as required in the operation of firefighting equipment.  
  • Demonstrate physical aptitude as required by essential functions.  
  • Read, understand and retain the information in technical materials, rules, regulations and procedures related to fire fighting.  
  • Read street maps and navigate streets.  
  • Learn to operate and perform basic service and troubleshooting on small motors.  
  • Learn to operate all firefighting equipment, both manually operated and motorized.  
  • Learn to analyze emergency situations and quickly determine effective courses of action.  
  • Learn the layout of the City's major cross streets and street numbering system. 
  • Learn to read and interpret geographic information systems maps.  
  • Learn to identify various hazardous materials.  
  • Learn and follow all applicable safety procedures.  
  • Retain presence of mind in emergency situations.  
  • Observe the details of a situation and act accordingly.  
  • Think and act quickly and effectively in emergencies.  
  • Understand and follow oral and written directions promptly and accurately.  
  • Operate and maintain voice radio equipment.  
  • Work in adverse physical locations and conditions.  
  • Communicate clearly, concisely and effectively, both orally and in writing.  
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work.  
  • Learn and use computers and tablets, along with related computer programs and software applications.  
  • Meet the City’s medical standard, including passing an annual physical examination with an agency selected by the City.  
  • Maintain physical condition to perform essential duties.  

WORKING CONDITIONS:

  • Work in an emergency fire fighting environment; work in medical emergency situations, including vehicle accidents and other types of medical and rescue emergencies; work in intense life-threatening conditions; exposure to fire, smoke, bodily fluids, heights and noise.  
  • Essential functions may require maintaining physical condition necessary for running, walking, crawling, climbing, stooping and heavy lifting while wearing heavy protective equipment; work in inclement weather conditions for prolonged periods of time.  
  • Must be able to work any shift or days of the week.  
  • Regular and timely attendance is required.

  • Academy Recruit- $23.77/hr
  • Firefighter (post-academy)- $52,026.70/yr
  • Firefighter/Paramedic (post-academy)- $59,831.00/yr
