ESSENTIAL INFORMATION

- Pay Considerations – The starting hourly pay for this position is $42.60. Starting salary is based on education, qualifications, and experience. Existing employees will receive increases as outlined by their bargaining agreement.
- Work Schedule – This position is scheduled to work 4 days per week, 9 hours per day, (36 hour work week) Monday through Thursday, 7:00am to 5:00pm at the North Las Vegas Fire Administration Building: 4040 Losee Rd. North Las Vegas, NV 89030. May be required to work nighttime, weekends, and/or holidays.
- Environment – May work in field environment, including structurally unstable buildings and various hazardous environments to include within or around smoke, dust, fumes, chemicals, hazardous materials, or other conditions associated with the investigation of fire, incendiary or hazardous devices.
THE ROLE
Supervise the fire investigation division of the fire department. Investigate fires as assigned to determine the origin and identify cause in an effort to prevent fires. Investigate spills and releases of hazardous materials in an effort to prevent environmental and/or life safety threats; if the cause of fire or spills/releases is determined to be negligent, careless, or incendiary; to enforce local, state, and federal codes, laws and ordinances. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Education and Experience
- Five or more years of experience as a full-time Fire Fighter at the NFPA FF level II and a valid Nevada POST certification (Category-I) or equivalent state certification with ability to obtain Nevada POST Category-I Basic In-Lieu Certification Reciprocity within 6 months of appointment. Current certification by the International Association of Arson Investigators as a Certified Fire Investigator is highly desirable.
- OR Five or more years of experience as a full-time government law enforcement officer with a Nevada POST certification (Category-I) or equivalent state certification with ability to obtain Nevada POST Category-I Basic In-Lieu Certification Reciprocity within 6 months of appointment. Current certification by the International Association of Arson Investigators as a Certified Fire Investigator is highly desirable.
- OR Five or more years of experience as a North Las Vegas Fire Department employee with a NFPA FF level II certification or certification by the International Association of Arson Investigators as a Certified Fire Investigator or certification by the National Association of Fire Investigators as a Certified Fire and Explosion Investigator; and successful completion of a Nevada POST certification (Category-I) Academy within 12 months of appointment.
- Bachelor’s Degree from a regionally accredited college, university or technical school, with major course work in fire science, fire administration, fire or arson investigation, criminal justice, chemistry, engineering, physical science, or related field preferred. Successful completion of the U.S. Fire Administration National Fire Academy Arson Curriculum (R-203, R-205, R-207, and/or R-208) preferred. Successfully pass a physical fitness examination which meets or exceeds requirements for Nevada Peace Officer status as determined by the Nevada Commission on Peace Officers’ Standards & Training (NAC 289).
Licenses and Certifications:
- Must maintain currency at the Nevada POST Category I level as outlined and maintained by the Nevada Commission on Peace Officers’ Standards & Training (NAC 289) and any applicable Nevada Revised Statutes effecting status as a Nevada Peace Officer.
- If not currently certified at time of appointment, must obtain and maintain certification by the International Association of Arson Investigators as a Certified Fire Investigator or certification by the National Association of Fire Investigators as a Certified Fire and Explosion Investigator within one year of hire/reclassification.
SELECTION PROCESS

- The selection process will begin with a screening of the application/resume - The best qualified candidates will be invited to participate in the assessment process. The selection process will include: (dates to be determined)
- Fire Chief Review.
- Pre-Employment Screening – Selected candidates for this position are subject to a pre-employment screening which includes but is not limited to local & state criminal history check; federal criminal history check via submission of fingerprints; and drug screening. *IMPORTANT INFORMATION: Background check processing may take 2 to 3 months to complete.
