ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
This class specification lists the major duties and requirements of the job and is not all-inclusive. Incumbent(s) may be expected to perform job-related duties other than those contained in this document and may be required to have specific job-related knowledge and skills.
• Performs general and/or specialized language interpretation and translation services for court operations and proceedings.
• Performs verbal and sight interpretation in simultaneous and consecutive modes for court proceedings, hearings, interviews and other court related events.
• Translates official forms, documents and other legal documents and correspondence.
• Provides, arranges and/or develops on-going training for on-call interpreters.
• Maintains records of interpretation and translation activities using automated tracking systems.
• Assists non-English speaking persons in completing forms required for the court, and assists non-English speaking walk-in persons in the court facilities.
• Informs non-English speaking persons of the functions the Interpreter is and is not permitted to perform, according to the standards of ethics and professional conduct established by the Nevada Administrative Office of the Court (AOC).
• Prepares reports and maintain statistics of the types and number of interpretation services requested, the languages requested and others, as required.
• Responds to and assist in resolving difficult and sensitive citizen inquiries.
• Perform general clerical duties when not required to interpret or translate.
• Transcribes taped interviews or court material as required.
• Promotes and supports the overall mission of the City by demonstrating courteous and cooperative behavior when interacting with public and staff; acts in a manner that promotes a harmonious and effective workplace environment.
Qualifications and Attributes:
To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required.
Education and Experience:
• Bachelor’s degree in a specific language area related to area of assignment.
• Two (2) years of translation/interpretation support experience
• OR an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.
Licenses and Certifications:
Continued employment is contingent upon all required licenses and certificates being maintained in active status without suspension or revocation.
• Nevada Certified Court Interpreter.
Required Knowledge and Skills
Required Knowledge:
• Court and City and department policies and procedures.
• Legal system terminology, forms, documents and procedures.
• Methods, techniques, ethics and standards of interpretation and translation services.
• Computer applications related to the work.
• Office practices and procedures including record keeping practices.
• Techniques for collaborating with a variety of individuals from various socioeconomic, ethnic and cultural backgrounds, in person and over the telephone, often where relations may be confrontational or strained.
Required Skills:
• Translating forms, letters and court documents, including simultaneous sight translation and verbal interpretation.
• Developing and coordinating complex work assignment schedules.
• Performing accurate interpretations and translations of legal and various technical materials.
• Interpreting, applying and explaining applicable laws, codes and regulations.
• Using initiative and independent judgment within established procedural guidelines.
• Communicating effectively in person, over the telephone and by email.
• Performing detailed office support duties.
• Meeting critical time deadlines.
• Performing duties within established procedural guidelines.
• Contributing effectively to the accomplishment of team or work unit goals, objectives and activities.
• Preparing clear and concise reports, correspondence and other written materials.
• Using tact, discretion and prudence in working with those contacted in the course of the work.
