MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education and Experience

·         Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university with major coursework in biology, chemistry, forensic science, or closely related field.

·         Minimum three (3) years of full-time, uninterrupted, progressively responsible experience performing latent print comparisons for a municipal police agency, county sheriff’s office, or government agency within the last ten years.

·         Equivalency:  An equivalent combination of education, experience, training, and certifications that provides the knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform the essential functions.  The city assesses one (1) year of appropriate type and level experience to one (1) year of post high school education. 

 

Licenses and Certifications

·         Must possess a valid Nevada state driver’s license or have the ability to obtain, and maintain a satisfactory motor vehicle record. 

·         Possess or have the ability to obtain Latent Print certification through the International Association for Identification within one (1) year of hire date; certification must be maintained through duration of employment

·         Must be able to satisfactorily complete a North Las Vegas Police Department Latent Print Examiner Training Program within the required time frame for the program to include:

o    Security Awareness training and NCIC/NCJIS certification

o    Ten-print proficiency examination

o    Latent print processing proficiency examination

o    Comparison photography proficiency examination

o    Latent print comparison proficiency examination

SELECTION PROCESS

1. Complete Online Application - Interested candidates MUST submit a completed application through the City’s application system. Evaluation of meeting requirements will be made solely on information provided on the application and any required attachments.

2. The selection process will begin with a screening of the application/resume - The best qualified candidates will be invited to participate in the assessment process. The selection process will include (dates to be determined).

3. Proficiency Test - Pass/Fail

4. Oral Board Interview - (Weighted 100%, Passing Score 70%)

*The selected candidate may undergo an assessment/screening for visual acuity requirements as stated on the job description. 

4. Pre-Employment Screening - Background Screening/Investigation Includes an extensive background check, polygraph/CVSA examination, medical/drug screen exam. All top scoring candidates must pass the Background Investigation in order to move forward in the process. Applicants who proceed in the selection process will be required to complete an extensive police background. Among other items, the following are disqualifying behaviors:

  • Any felony conviction.
  • Any domestic violence conviction.
  • Gross misdemeanor and misdemeanor convictions will be reviewed on a case by case basis.
  •  Although there have been recent changes to laws regarding the legal possession and consumption of marijuana, the City of North Las Vegas will continue to adhere to its professional standards and guidelines as it relates to recent and continuous use of the drug.

5. Selection/Offers 

 

Note: Subsequent vacancies during the life of the internal eligibility list may require participation in an additional selection interview. The selection interview will be weighted 100%, requiring a passing score of 70% in order to be considered for the subsequent position vacancy.

 

The selection process may include any combination of written, performance, and oral assessments to evaluate job-related education, experience, knowledge, skills, and abilities. The City reserves the right to modify selection devices and test instruments in accordance with accepted legal, ethical, and professional standards.
