IMPORTANT INFORMATION!

·         Shift work required - This position supports an operation that is open 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. You must be able to work any shift (days, swings, or graveyard), and any day of the week, to include weekends, holidays, and overtime. Currently, the schedule consists of 12-hours shifts and are divided into two squads with days off being Sunday, Monday, and Tuesday, or Thursday, Friday, and Saturday. 

·         Must successfully complete training program - Successful lateral candidates will participate in an accelerated 3 - 6 week training/orientation program, in addition to a 14 week field training program.

·         Pay considerations - The starting hourly pay for this position is $27.77 (step 1). All new employees hired for this position will start at step 1 of the range, no exceptions. Existing employees will receive increases as outlined by their bargaining agreement.

·         Working conditions - Work is performed indoors and outdoors in all types of weather within the secure perimeter of the Correctional Center, most of the time. Must be able to work in an environment subjected to sufficient noise and be able to shout in order to be heard above the ambient noise level. Must be able to function and work around unruly or physically disrupting individuals.

·         Background and Disqualifiers – Applicants who proceed in the selection process will be required to complete an extensive police background check. Among other items, the following are disqualifying behaviors –

·         Any felony conviction.

·         Any domestic violence conviction.

·         Gross misdemeanor and misdemeanor convictions will be reviewed on a case by case basis.

·         Although there have been recent changes to laws regarding the legal possession and consumption of marijuana, the City of North Las Vegas will continue to adhere to its professional standards and guidelines as it relates to recent and continuous use of the drug.

 

 

THE ROLE:

This LATERAL CORRECTIONS OFFICER position is designed for officers that have a minimum of two years of continuous service with a law enforcement agency and that are CURRENTLY employed with another agency AND have a Category III Nevada POST Certificate.

 

A copy of the applicant’s current and valid Nevada Peace Officers Standards and Training (POST) Category III certification MUST be scanned and attached to the on-line application.

 

Under general supervision, performs security work overseeing and directing the activities of inmates within the Community Corrections Center and during transport to other facilities, and performs related duties as required.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Education and Experience:

·     Must currently possess a Nevada Peace Officers Standards and Training (POST) Category III certification*

·     High school diploma or equivalent, Character above reproach. Must be able to work in a security type environment and manage stressful and potentially dangerous/difficult inmate contact situations.

·     Possess and maintain a valid driver license. Upon hire, possess a Nevada or "border state" driver license under conditions defined by Nevada Revised Statute 483.035

·     Must be a U.S. citizen at time of filing 

·     Must be at least 21 years of age at time of filing

·     Must have no convictions for offenses greater than a misdemeanor. Must have no convictions for offenses of domestic violence

·     Visual acuity must be correctable to 20/40 in one eye and 20/30 in both eyes.

·     Hearing must be 30 decibels or less for each ear

·     Must successfully complete the North Las Vegas Police Department Advanced Academy within the time frame prescribed by the department


ASSESSMENT INFORMATION:

·         Physical Fitness Test (Pass/Fail) – Scheduled by appointment only.

·         Oral Board (Weighted 100%) – Scheduled by appointment only.

 

 SELECTION PROCESS

1.      Complete online application - Interested candidates MUST submit a completed application through the City’s application system. Evaluation of meeting requirements will be made solely on information provided on the application and any required attachments. Once application is submitted and reviewed a Human Resources Talent Acquisition Team member will be reaching out to invite you the Physical Agility Test.

2.      PHYSICAL AGILITY TEST (Invitation Only)
Those invited to the Physical Agility Test will be contacted by email. The Nevada Administrative Code Section 289.200 sets the physical fitness standards required for a law enforcement recruit. Watch Video .

City of North Las Vegas Testing Standards:

·         Vertical Jump - 15 inches

·         Agility Run – 20.4 SECONDS

·         Push Ups – 20 qualifying push-ups (no time limit; but any rest is in the up position)

·         300 Meter Run – 74 seconds

·         1.5 Mile Run – 17 minutes, 37 seconds

3.      Pre-Employment Screening –Background Screening/Investigation Includes an extensive background check, polygraph/CVSA examination, medical/drug screen exam, and a psychological evaluation. All top scoring candidates must pass the Background Investigation in order to move forward in the process. Applicants who proceed in the selection process will be required to complete an extensive police background. Among other items, the following are disqualifying behaviors:

o    Any felony conviction.

o    Any domestic violence conviction.

o    Gross misdemeanor and misdemeanor convictions will be reviewed on a case by case basis.
