MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED:
Education and Experience:
- Graduation from high school or equivalent and four (4) years of skilled experience in performing equipment maintenance and repair in a water or wastewater plant or industrial setting.
- Successful completion of a recognized apprenticeship in an electrical or mechanical trade may be substituted on a year for year basis.
- Attendance at a recognized trade school is desirable, as is experience in a wastewater treatment plant.
- Any combination of education, training and experience which produces the knowledge, skills and abilities required for the job and related to the essential functions of the position.
Equivalency:
May substitute a combination of
equivalent education and experience. The
city assesses 1 year of fulltime experience as equivalent to one year of
education.
Licenses and Certifications:
- Must possess a valid state driver’s license and maintain a satisfactory motor vehicle record with the ability to obtain an appropriate Nevada state driver’s license at time of appointment; specified positions may require possession of a Class B license.
- Possession of a crane operator's certification through the National Commission for the Certification of Crane Operator's (NCCCO) or an equivalent organization within twenty-four (24) months from date of hire.
- Possession of an appropriate forklift certification within twenty-four (24) months from the date of hire.
- Must possess a valid Nevada Water Environment Association (NWEA) Plant Mechanical Technologist Grade 2 Certification within thirty (30) months from date of hire.
Other certifications requirements may apply for specific appointments. Reciprocity for equivalent certifications from other states may be considered.
Knowledge:
- Basic mechanical and electrical pneumatic and hydraulic maintenance and repair principles and practices.
- Operation and maintenance of a variety of hand, power and shop tools and test and repair equipment used in the trade.
- Safe work methods and safety regulations pertaining to the work.
- Shop mathematics.
- Basic record keeping practices.
- Methods and materials used in the installation, maintenance and repair of various types of wastewater and water plant processing and control systems and related equipment.
- Methods and materials used in the installation, maintenance and repair of pumps, valves and related piping systems.
- Electrical and electronic principles and control systems related to the maintenance mechanic trade.
Skills:
- Performing routine preventive maintenance and repair on a variety of plant mechanical and electrical pneumatic and hydraulic systems and equipment.
- Safely using and maintaining hand and power tools and test and repair equipment related to the work.
- Maintaining accurate records of work performed.
- Reading and interpreting manuals, specifications, drawings and blueprints.
- Understanding and following oral and written directions.
- Establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with those encountered in the course of the work.
- Operating and maintaining specialized tools and test and safety and repair equipment of the maintenance mechanic trade.
- Designing, laying out and preparing sketches for equipment and related installation and maintenance jobs.
- Estimating necessary materials, parts and equipment to complete assignments.
- Directing and instructing others on a project basis.
- Using initiative and independent judgment within established procedural guidelines.
- Contributing effectively to the accomplishment of team or work unit goals, objectives and activities.
- Installs and maintains electrical and electronic information and control systems associated with plant and lift station operating equipment.
- Inspects plant equipment, chemical feeders, valves, piping systems and pumps for proper operation.
- Performs preventive maintenance following an established schedule and repairs as required.
- Installs, inspects and maintains odor control facilities.
- Operates odor control stations including calibration of monitoring equipment.
- Ensures that all installation, maintenance and repair work is performed to code.
- Tests and troubleshoots plant mechanical and electrical pneumatic and hydraulic system malfunctions, repairs or orders and replaces components, and tests equipment prior to placing back into service.
- Reads diagrams, blueprints, specifications and manuals for installation and repair projects.
- Maintains and services hand and power tools and mechanical repair equipment related to the trade.
- Keeps small inventory of frequently used supplies and parts.
- Prepares working drawings and sketches.
- Observes safety precautions when working with energized equipment.
- Contributes to the efficiency and effectiveness of the unit's service to its customers by offering suggestions and directing or participating as an active member of a work team.
- May direct the work of less skilled assistants on specific projects; ensures that proper safety precautions are followed.
- Maintains records of work performed and materials used.
- Occasionally operates construction equipment.
- Drives City vehicles to plant work sites and transports materials and assistants as required.
- May work from and on lift trucks and other aerial devices.
- Basic welding and repair and maintenance of welding equipment.
