ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: (Essential and other important responsibilities and duties may include, but are not limited to, the following)
• Plans, coordinates and assigns the work of unskilled and semi-skilled employees; monitors and evaluates the work performance of the employees; monitors and evaluates the work outputs to maintain quality and quantity of work performed. Resolves work flow problems to ensure deadlines are met.
• Plans and estimates parks maintenance projects including all costs of materials, equipment and work hours.
• Trains assigned employees on the safe performance of their assignments, the safe operation of tools and equipment, and current horticultural methods, practices and procedures.
• Schedules preventative maintenance to equipment and facilities.
• Performs all landscape and horticultural duties assigned to park maintenance division.
• Installs, repairs and maintains irrigation systems including adjusts, repairs and replaces timing mechanisms and other parts of the irrigation system. Uses the city-wide irrigation computer program.
• Reads and interprets standard plans, specifications, blueprints and schematics; may sketch plans as needed.
• Inspects assigned areas and corrects or reports safety hazards.
• Cleans and maintains all facilities assigned to park maintenance division.
• Grooms and prepares ball fields and other park facilities for public use.
• Mixes and applies herbicides, fungicides and pesticides.
• Sets up, lays out and removes equipment and supplies for special events and/or large groups.
• Assists in and inspects the construction of new parks and recreational facilities.
• Maintains and performs repair work on a variety of park facilities and equipment including painting, plumbing, carpentry, masonry, and concrete work.
• Break and repair concrete and asphalt surfaces; excavate and replace concrete asphalt and blacktop surfaces; repair and install fences and gates; lay brick.
• Maintains a variety of hand and power landscaping tools and equipment including hand and power mowers, tractors, man lift, chipper, blowers, hedge trimmers, weed eaters, rakes, shovels, hoes, brooms, and other tools; makes minor repairs such as sharpening blades, routine maintenance and safety inspections.
• Operates tractors and attachments (medium sized loaders, roto-tillers, trenchers, front-end loader, backhoe, five ton dump truck), man lift, chipper, power mowers, riding mowers, weed eaters, blowers, sweepers, hedge trimmers, and other equipment or vehicles.
• Observes safe work methods and uses safety equipment. Secures work sites from safety hazards as necessary.
• Responds to questions and complainants from the public in a courteous manner.
• Maintains records of work performed; makes detailed reports of problems in facilities and forwards reports to supervisor.
• Instructs and directs the work of part-time, less experienced staff and may direct the work of inmate crews.
• Maintain pool facilities, including picking up litter, cleaning rest rooms, showers, locker rooms, pool decks, windows, staff areas; brush and backwash pools; check water quality and chemical balance; perform minor repairs; empty pool filter baskets; identify major repairs and report to supervisor; paint as needed; maintain inventory of equipment and supplies.
• Maintain golf course facilities, including picking up litter, cleaning rest rooms, locker rooms, windows, staff areas; setting holes; perform minor repairs; identify major repairs and report to supervisor; paint as needed; maintain inventory of equipment and supplies.
• Removal of trash, graffiti, debris, signs, vegetation, vagrant camps, shopping carts and abandoned items from assigned work areas.
• May do requisition or purchase parts and supplies needed to complete installations or repairs to facilities or systems.
• Performs other duties as required.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED:
Education and Experience:
• High school diploma or equivalent and Cooperative Extension or Community College courses in Horticulture, Landscape Management, Pruning, Irrigation, and Soils.
• Three to four year(s) of progressively responsible experience performing park, landscape or horticultural maintenance work or one year as a Parks Maintenance Worker for the City of North Las Vegas.
Licenses and Certifications:
• Must possess a valid state driver's license and maintain satisfactory motor vehicle record and ability to obtain appropriate Nevada state driver’s license within required time frame.
• Swimming Pool Service Technician.
• Nevada Restricted Use Pesticide Certificate.
• Nevada State Commercial Driver’s License Class B.
• Fork Lift Operators License within six months of hire or reclassification.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
• Maintaining a variety of landscaped areas.
• Recognizing common plant and insect pests.
• Basic painting, plumbing, masonry, carpentry, concrete work.
• Methods and techniques of planting, transplanting, cultivation, pruning and maintaining a variety of lawns, ground cover, plants, shrubs, hedges and trees.
• Soil preparation and enrichment.
• Methods and equipment used in weed, pest and insect control and treating of plant diseases.
• Installation, maintenance and repair of irrigation systems.
• Swimming pool maintenance.
• Golf course maintenance.
• Communicating clearly and effectively with others both orally and in written form.
• Scheduling, leading and directing the work of unskilled and semi-skilled workers.
• Training of unskilled and semi-skilled workers.
• Making arithmetic calculations to estimate jobs and order materials and supplies.

• Understanding and following oral and written directions.
• Preparing records and reports of work performed.
• Working without close supervision in standard work situations.
Working Conditions:
Usually works in a normal office environment where there is little or no physical discomfort associated with changes in weather or discomfort associated with noise, dust, dirt and the like.
This position does require the ability to maintain the mental and emotional capacity to deal with difficult customers in person or on the phone.
