Key Focus of the Role:
(Duties may include, but are not limited to, the following)
- Receives and reviews plans for building construction to ensure conformance with the requirements of the building, electrical, mechanical, plumbing, accessibility, energy, structural codes and regulations, other City ordinances and requirements, and any applicable federal and state laws and requirements.
- Assists the public with questions regarding departmental policies procedures, applicable codes, and in the modification of plans to upgrade them to acceptable standards.
- Meets with engineers, contractors, developers, architects, and private citizens to discuss and explain technical requirements of codes and ordinances.
- Conducts research and provides interpretations of codes and ordinances.
- Reviews building permit applications for completeness and correctness of documents.
- Periodically accompanies inspectors to provide advice and guidance when extraordinarily complicated or controversial construction problems or questions arise.
- Provides service at a public counter to answer questions, approve minor plans for building permit issuance.
- Performs other duties as required.
Qualifications and Attributes:
- Associates Degree from an accredited college OR university in civil, structural or architectural engineering or a field related to the work; AND Two(2) years of experience in Structural Engineering Design; OR two(2) years experience as a Plans Examiner; OR two(2) years experience in Architectural Design with emphasis on building codes and regulations.
Equivalency: Four(4) years of experience as a Plans Examiner or four(4) years experience in Architectural Design with exposure to building codes and regulations OR five(5) years experience in Engineering Structural Design may be substituted for the education and experience required above.
- International Code Council (ICC) Plans Examiner certification within one(1) year of hire or promotion.
- Must possess a valid state driver's license and maintain satisfactory motor vehicle record with the ability to obtain appropriate Nevada state driver’s license within required time frame.
