ESSENTIAL INFORMATION 

THE ROLE

The Survey/GIS Intern will support the Public Works Survey and GIS Division by assisting with a variety of technical and administrative activities that support municipal surveying and geospatial operations. This includes scanning, indexing, and organizing historical survey records, performing document management and quality control of digital files, maintaining GIS data, assisting with map production, and supporting CAD drafting and survey research. The intern may also assist with organizing field data, preparing surveying equipment, and providing support to field crews as needed. Depending on the intern's qualifications and departmental priorities, they may have the opportunity to assist with GIS analysis, GPS data collection, field surveying activities, and other geospatial projects under the guidance of professional staff. Beyond the technical work, this internship provides hands-on exposure to municipal surveying, GIS, and infrastructure development while offering the opportunity to build practical skills, gain experience with industry-standard technologies, and contribute to projects that support the City's planning, engineering, and public works operations


The hourly pay for this position is $15 - $19 (based on education level).

Work Schedule
This position is scheduled to work up to 28 hours weekly between Monday and Thursday, 7:30 a.m. - 5:30 p.m.  Hours are flexible. 

This internship period will start August 24th and end on December 10th 

Part-Time/Temporary Position

  • This position is a part time/temporary position and does not include health or medical benefits.
  • Hours for this position will not exceed 935 per calendar year (see weekly hours for this position under work schedule).

IDEAL CANDIDATE

The ideal candidate is a motivated student currently pursuing a degree in Land Surveying, Geomatics, Geospatial Science, Geographic Information Systems (GIS), Geography, Civil Engineering, Engineering Technology, Environmental Science, Urban Planning, or a related field. We are looking for someone who is detail-oriented, organized, and eager to learn, with strong computer skills and the ability to adapt to new technologies such as GIS and CAD software. The ideal candidate communicates effectively, works well both independently and as part of a team, and is comfortable following technical procedures in both office and field environments. Coursework or experience in GIS, CAD, surveying, mapping, plan reading, or records management is preferred but not required. Most importantly, we're looking for someone with a strong work ethic, a willingness to learn, and an interest in gaining hands-on experience supporting municipal surveying, mapping, and geospatial operations.

 

ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS

  • Current enrollment in any of the following degree programs: Geographic Information Systems, Civil Engineering, Engineering Technology (Civil or Geomatics emphasis), Urban Planning (with GIS coursework) or a related field 
  • Current enrollment with a minimum of 6 credit hours per semester (undergraduate level) or 3 credit hours per semester (graduate level)
  • Recent graduates are encouraged to apply
  • Cumulative GPA of 2.0 or higher
  • A valid Nevada driver’s license
  • Legal right to work in the U.S.
