Ideal Candidate

The ideal candidate for the Senior Engineer – Development and Flood Control role is a highly skilled civil engineer with expertise in flood control, drainage design, and regulatory compliance. The candidate is a licensed Professional Engineer in Nevada and a Certified Floodplain Manager, or can obtain Nevada registration (if licensed in another state) and certification through the Association of State Floodplain Managers within one year of hire. They have strong proficiency in hydrologic modeling and hydraulic analysis software (HEC-1, HEC-RAS, WSPG, Flowmaster, etc.) and experience reviewing private development drainage studies and civil improvement plans to ensure compliance with locally adopted regulations. This individual has the ability to analyze and resolve drainage issues and manage multiple projects while collaborating effectively with internal staff, developers, contractors, and other government agencies. The individual also possesses an extensive knowledge of engineering principals, local laws, and regulatory standards and can effectively apply them to often complex design and construction projects while upholding their commitment to public safety.

ESSENTIAL INFORMATION

  • Pay Considerations – The starting salary for the position is $92,434.42. Starting salary is dependent on education, qualifications, and experience. Existing employees will receive increases as outlined by their bargaining agreement.
  • Work Schedule – This position is scheduled to work 4 days per week, 9 hours per day (36 hour work week), Monday through Thursday, 7:00am to 5:00pm.
  • Environment – While performing the essential functions of the job the employee is primarily required to work in a typical office setting, use standard office equipment, read printed materials and a computer screen and communication in person and over the telephone. Works in an office environment where there is little or no physical discomfort associated with changed in weather or discomfort associated with noise, dust, dirt, etc.

THE ROLE
Under limited direction, manages, and supervises team members for civil engineering design and/or construction projects and programs; performs professional and technical engineering duties; performs senior-level engineering planning, design, and/or construction oversight for various building construction, remodeling, and major repairs, as well as for flood control, water and wastewater utilities, and other public facilities.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Education and Experience

  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university with major course work in civil engineering or a closely related field.
  • Four (4) years of professional engineering experience in the applicable area of responsibility (Engineering Services, Development and Flood Control, Technical Services, Water/Wastewater or Transportation Services), preferably in a public agency.

Licenses and Certifications

  • Must possess or have the ability to obtain a valid Nevada state driver’s license, and maintain a satisfactory motor vehicle record.
  • Registered Professional Engineer (PE) in the State of Nevada. If registered in another state must obtain Nevada registration within one (1) year of hire/reclassification. Registered Professional Architect in State of Nevada. If registered in another state must obtain Nevada registration within one (1) year of hire/reclassification. (Public Works, Engineering Services candidates only).
  • Certification through the Association of State Floodplain Managers Certified Floodplain Manager Program required within one (1) year of hire/reclassification. (Development and Flood Control Division candidates only)
  • Certification as a Professional Traffic Operations Engineer preferred. (Traffic Engineering Position candidates only)

SELECTION PROCESS

  1. Complete Online Application - Interested candidates MUST submit a completed application through the City’s application system. Evaluation of meeting requirements will be made solely on information provided on the application and any required attachments.
  2.  The selection process will begin with a screening of the application/resume - The best qualified candidates will be invited to participate in the assessment process. The selection process will include (dates to be determined).
  3. Oral Board Interview - (Weighted 100%, Passing Score 70%).
  4. Pre-Employment Screening - Selected candidates for this position are subject to a pre-employment screening which includes but is not limited to local & state criminal history check; federal criminal history checks via submission of fingerprints; and drug screening. **IMPORTANT INFORMATION: Background check processing may take 2 to 3 months to complete..
  5. Selection/Offers - 

Note: Subsequent vacancies during the life of the internal eligibility list may require participation in an additional selection interview. The selection interview will be weighted 100%, requiring a passing score of 70% in order to be considered for the subsequent position vacancy.
