Key Focus of the Role:

(Essential and other important responsibilities and duties may include, but are not limited to, the following)

  • Performs skilled and semi-skilled work in the construction, installation, repair and maintenance of water and wastewater lines, mains and facilities; locates mains and valves by using maps, GPS or correlator equipment; locates all utilities by pot-holing; determines the amount of hand digging required; prepares barricade plans and sets up and removes barricades to protect crews from street traffic; excavates and backfills sidewalks, streets, trenches and culverts using hand and power tools; exposes mains and lines, following safe dig practices and shutdown procedures; installs and removes various types of trench shoring; assesses damage and determines materials required to make repairs; cuts mains, lines, pipes and cables to permit repairs and installation; replaces old mains and pipes; performs main taps under pressure or following main shutdowns; operates large and small valves to shut -off and turn on water service.
  • Performs skilled work in assembling, laying and aligning water and wastewater mains and service lines; establishes stable main and pipe base when necessary; cuts pipes using saws, pipe-cutters, torches and other tools; caulks joints; threads and bends pipe.
  • Works in vaults and other confined spaces, utilizing proper safety techniques and equipment in accordance with City and departmental safety policies and procedures; lifts and removes vault lids; ventilates vaults; performs vault repairs.  Must be able to perform tasks while wearing airline respirator equipment.
  • Locates buried valves at varying underground depths; inspects and tests valves; determines water flow direction and performs required main shutdown procedures; installs, repairs and replaces corporation stop, angle meter stop and curb stop valves under pressure or following main shutdowns; assembles and repairs pressure reducing and air vacuum release valves; fabricates valve fittings; installs and repairs meters.
  • Repairs meter and valve boxes; raises and lowers valve boxes; removes broken and installs new sections; centers valve boxes; backfills and tamps with gravel; tamps asphalt fill to grade.
  • Installs and maintains automated metering infrastructure (AMI) devices. Installs, repairs and replaces and maintains fire hydrants.
  • Operates a variety of equipment including dump trucks, backhoes, vacuum trucks, skip loaders, compressors, tapping machines, concrete saws, valve machines, jack hammers, pipe cutters, concrete saws and a wide variety of other hand, hydraulic and power equipment; checks condition of equipment; cleans and maintains tools and equipment used.
  • Provides customer assistance on water quality and pressure requests, and flush fire hydrants; blow off dead end lines; performs leak detection.
  • Performs inventory and supply duties: keeps records of all parts in and out of part room.
  • Reviews and prioritizes work orders, and uses available resources to complete work assignments of varying nature and difficulty in the operation and maintenance of City water and waste water systems.
  • Responds to emergency call outs and may be required to be on standby.
  • Regular and timely attendance is required.
  • Applicant must be able to work any shift and will be subject to stand by.
  • Performs other duties as required.

Qualifications and Attributes:

  • High school diploma or equivalent AND additional vocational or technical training in mechanical maintenance is preferred.
  • Two (2)years of progressively responsible experience performing construction and maintenance in the repair and maintenance of water and wastewater systems preferred. 
  • Experience using a backhoe in small or large water and wastewater systems construction/maintenance or utility construction or utility maintenance is preferred.
  • Must possess a valid Nevada State Class “A” Commercial Driver’s License with tanker endorsements, within six months of the time of hire/reclassification.
  • Must possess State of Nevada Water Distribution Operator Certificate, Grade I, at the time of application for hire, promotion, transfer or reclassification.
  • Completion of OSHA 10 Hour construction course no later than 15 days after starting in position.
  • Proficiency operating a backhoe. Working with hand and power tools.

PRE-EMPLOYMENT SCREENING:

  • Candidates for this position are subject to a Pre-employment screening.  Pre-employment screening includes but is not limited to: Local and State Criminal History Check; Federal Criminal History Check via submission of fingerprints, and a drug screen.

Selection Process

  • Practical Exam Required: Passing Score of 70% or Higher to proceed to the Oral Panel Interview
  • Oral Interview: 100%
  • Passing Score: 70%
