A Utilities Maintenance Mechanic is an essential member of our team and we invite you to apply and help contribute to CNLV’S growing success! 

This posting will create a non-probationary internal Teamster eligibility list and fill one (1) vacancy for this classification. The current vacancy is in the Utilities department. The eligibility list will be utilized to fill vacancies for this classification, for up to one hundred eighty (180) days. Non-probationary Teamster team members successfully completing the selection process will be placed on the eligibility list.

ESSENTIAL INFORMATION

  • Pay Considerations –The starting hourly pay for this position is $30.66.  The selected candidate for this position will start at the beginning of the salary range, no exceptions.   Existing employees will receive increases as outlined by their bargaining agreement.
  • Work Schedule – This position is scheduled to work 4 days per week, 9 hours per day (36 hour work week), Monday through Thursday, 6:00am to 3:30pm.
  • Environment – Working evening, night, weekend, and holiday shifts. Participate in standby/on-call program. Work extended shifts or be called back in emergency situations. Work outdoors in hot and cold environments. Work with exposure to hazardous chemicals and substances found in the wastewater treatment process. Work in confined spaces where sewage and H2S gases are present. Perform duties from high elevations utilizing a ladder or man lift. Exposure to gases or liquids associated with a wastewater treatment facility. Hydrogen Sulfide (H2S) and Methane. Exposure to chemicals used in the treatment of waste water and water distribution system (Sodium Hypochlorite, Citric Acid, Polymer, Ferric Chloride and Sodium Bisulfite and Calcium Hypochlorite, Acids). While performing the essential functions of this job, the employee is regularly required to work in a typical office environment, use standard office equipment, read printed material and a computer terminal/screen, communicate in person and over the telephone, and is frequently required to stand, walk, sit, use hands to fingers, handle, or feel, climb or balance, talk and hear, and lift and/or move up to 100 pounds. May be required to wear Personal Protective Equipment when required.


THE ROLE
Performs routine to journey level installation, repairs, maintenance, cleaning and remodeling of pumping, control, processing, and related systems and Repair and test equipment on the utilities water distribution and wastewater treatment systems. Performs mechanical electrical, pneumatic and hydraulic troubleshooting problem diagnosis and repairs. 

This is a skilled journey level classification in this specialized trade, which perform the full range of installation, maintenance, cleaning and repair duties on wastewater equipment and the utilities water distribution system. Responsibilities also include the direction of an assistant or a crew on a project or team basis. This class is distinguished from other maintenance and repair classes by the requirement of specialized and well-developed skills in wastewater, water distribution and lift station maintenance area, rather than general facility maintenance or another recognized craft specialty area.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Education and Experience 

  • Graduation from High School or Equivalent, and four (4) years of skilled experience in performing equipment maintenance and repair in a water or wastewater plant or industrial setting. Successful completion of recognized apprenticeship in an electrical or mechanical trade may be substituted on a year for year basis. Attendance at a recognized trade school is desirable, as is experience in a wastewater treatment plant. 
  • Any combination of education, training and experience which produces the knowledge, skills, and abilities required for the job and related to the essential functions of the position
  • Equivalency: May substitute a combination of equivalent education and experience. The city assesses one year of fulltime experience as equivalent to one year of education

Licenses and Certifications 

  • Must possess a valid state driver’s license and maintain satisfactory motor vehicle record with the ability to obtain an appropriate Nevada state driver’s license at time of appointment; specified positions may require possession of a Class B license. 
  • Specified positions may require a crane operator’s certification through the National Commission of the Certification of Crane Operator’s (NCCCO) or equivalent
  • Possession of an appropriate City of North Las Vegas forklift certification with six (6) months from the date of hire.
  • Must possess a certification and have medical clearance to wear a full-face respirator and self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA) within six (6) months of hire.
  • Must possess a NDEP Water Distribution Grade 1 certification within eighteen (18) months from the date of hire.
  • Must possess a valid Nevada Water Environment Association (NWEA) Plant Mechanical Technologist Grade 2 Certification within thirty (30) months from date of hire.
  • Other certifications requirements may apply for specific appointments. Reciprocity for equivalent certifications from other states may be considered.

SELECTION PROCESS

  1. Complete online application - Interested candidates MUST submit a completed application through the City’s application system. Evaluation of meeting requirements will be made solely on information provided on the application and any required attachments.
  2. The selection process will begin with a screening of the application/resume - The best qualified candidates will be invited to participate in the assessment process. The selection process will include (dates to be determined).
  3. Oral Board Interview (Weighted 100%, Passing Score 70%)
  4. Pre-Employment Screening –   Selected candidates for this position are subject to a pre-employment screening which includes but is not limited to local & state criminal history check; federal criminal history checks via submission of fingerprints; and drug screening. **IMPORTANT INFORMATION: Background check processing may take 2 to 3 months to complete.
  5. Selection/Offers

Note: Subsequent vacancies during the life of the internal eligibility list may require participation in an additional selection interview. The selection interview will be weighted 100%, requiring a passing score of 70% in order to be considered for the subsequent position vacancy.
