Qualifications and Attributes:
Education and Experience:

  • High school diploma or equivalent is required and additional vocational or technical training in mechanical maintenance is preferred, and;
  • Two years of progressively responsible experience performing construction and maintenance on water distribution systems.
  • Equivalent: Four years of progressively responsible experience performing construction and maintenance on water distribution systems.
  • Two years of progressively responsible experience and satisfactory performance  as a Water Systems Operator I with the City of North Las Vegas, or;
  • Two years of progressively responsible experience as a water systems operator with a water distribution utility which has over 60,000 services, 2 or more pump stations, and 2 or more wells.

Licenses and Certifications:

  • Must possess a valid state driver's license and maintain satisfactory motor vehicle record and ability to obtain appropriate Nevada state driver’s license within required time frame.
  • Must possess and maintain a State of Nevada Water Distribution Operator Certificate Grade I at the time of application for hire, promotion, transfer, or reclassification.
  • Must possess and maintain a State of Nevada Water Distribution Operator Certificate, Grade II at time of application for hire, promotion, transfer, or reclassification.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Principles, methods and techniques for operating pumps, valves, electric motors, diesel engines and electronic, computerized and manual control systems.
  • Functions and servicing requirements of the equipment used for distribution of potable water.
  • Federal and state safe drinking water laws and regulations.
  • Computer applications as they apply to the work.
  • Working with hand and power tools.
  • Performing maintenance and repair tasks.
  • Performing required water tests.
  • Effective communications across disciplines/functions.
  • Use of hand and power tools to perform maintenance activities.
  • Use of computers and computer applications related to the work.
  • Perform basic maintenance on tools and equipment.
  • Read and understand manuals, specifications, drawings, and blueprints.
  • Understand and follow oral and written instructions.
  • Work as a member of a team, becoming increasingly knowledgeable and skillful in the field chosen.
  • Perform basic mathematical calculations.
  • Operate a motor vehicle.
  • While performing the essential functions of this job the employee is regularly required to sit, stand, and walk, use hands to finger, handle, or feel, reach with hands and arms, climb or balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl, and lift and/or move up to 100 pounds.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

  • While performing the essential functions of this job the employee is frequently exposed to outdoor weather conditions, work near moving mechanical parts, work in high precarious places, fumes or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals, risk of electrical shock, or vibration. 
  • Working conditions are typically moderately quiet, but may be loud for limited durations while working with power tools, equipment, or machinery following all prescribed safety rules and regulations.
  • Regular and timely attendance is required.
  • Employees are required to work shift work and weekends and are subject to 24-hour call out.

Selection Process: 
•    Test Required: Weight 100% Passing Score of 70% or Higher to proceed to the Oral Panel Interview
•    Oral Interview: Weight 100% Passing Score 70%
